Here’s a lesson I learned from Gina Horkey: Post your income reports. She says she admires when others do it, and it’s one thing that attracted me to the course in the first place.
By sharing and being open with the good, bad, and ugly of the freelance world, you can help guide others by helping them avoid the same mistakes you’ve made. I’ve learned a lot from Gina. I owe much of it to Gina’s course, 30 Days or Less to Freelance Writing Success.
I started this venture in the beginning of November by blogging my way through Gina’s course. I decided to do this, in part, to hold myself accountable and stick to every aspect of the course.

I’ve been working at meeting my pitching goal every day by sending out 10 pitches each day.
- 4 in response to ads
- 3 cold pitches with ideas
- 3 cold pitches to under-utilized websites and blogs
So far, I’m pitching with a 46% success rate.
My First Pitch
Now, the 46% I refer to includes paid and unpaid work. I’m still waiting for payments from a lot of paid work. So far, only my first client has been prompt with payments.
The First Two Months
I’m keeping a profit-and-loss statement for each month, October (when I purchased the course) and November (when I worked and blogged it). In addition, I’m keeping a rolling total of how much money I’ve made. Also, I’m keeping a record of money I receive (not bill).
November-December: $100 November’s income – $64 October’s start up expenses – $34 November’s expenses = $66 profit (a 104% increase month-over-month!)
My expenses have also decreased, but I suspect this is only temporary. Below is a detailed breakdown.
That’s right! I broke a profit my first month!! Granted, it’s a small one, but it’s there! It’s a reason to celebrate by pitching some more!
In October, I spent money on Gina’s course and the Yahoo! Style Guide. In November, I joined Tom Ewer’s Paid to Blog Jobs. I haven’t yet had a chance to try it out, but I certainly will and will report back my findings as always.
Thoughts on the Month
I cannot believe how far I’ve come! I’ve managed to turn a profit my first month by bootstrapping my business from the ground up. There’s no reason anyone else can’t do it!
Goals for December 2015
I have a few.
- Make $1,000 to cover Christmas expenses
- Open a savings account specifically for this
- Get into a major publication, which could open doors in the future
- Increase my pitching to compete in Gina’s pitching contest
New Blogging Schedule
While nothing thrilled me as much as getting up every day, day after day, to write about my experiences, it’s time to let go of my ambitious schedule. Moving forward, I think I’ll stick with one weekly blog post on Mondays. If there’s something super neat to share, I may add one or two during the week.
I’d especially love to start a weekly Friday-afternoon post covering one major thing I learned that week. You never know!
