What I Learned This Week from Working as a VA: Treat Your Own Business Like It’s Your Client

treat your own business like it's your clientI can’t yet call myself a seasoned pro at the virtual assisting game. But I decided to borrow an idea from someone else and give it a try.

Every week I’ll bring you an insight into the lesson I learned in my profession. I hope each of these will offer you some perspective and help you to conquer your struggles in building your online business.

But First, Some Background…

You already know that I took Gina Horkey’s course, 30 Days or Less to Freelance Writing Success. But what you don’t know is that I also completed her course, 30 Days or Less to Virtual Assisting Success in January 2016.

The course is packed with great information. And if you spring for the Rockstar Package, you get access to helpful videos and other neat stuff. I did. And that’s where this idea came from.

This Week’s Lesson

This week I learned I must put my own business first and treat its needs as seriously as I would the needs of any other client. There’re so many things I want to do for The Freelance Dance. Courses are waiting to be written. Outreach strategies are in the works. And all of it sits in a big, proverbial file box in my head marked “Pending.”

My Plan for Improving

To improve on my current pain point, I have decided to take time each morning (before I start working on anything else) to take care of whatever needs tending to.

My daily schedule will include special time to write, create posts, scout out guest contributors, and implement some of my outreach strategies.

I want to create opportunities for passive income. Several ideas come to mind. But my favorite of all is writing a few courses.

To get moving onto that, I’ll write posts relating to what I aim to teach. I’ve learned TONS in the last few months. And it’s time to hand that all down to someone else – just like it was done for me.

Challenges

My health issues are my biggest challenge. It’s a daily struggle to fight cancer’s fatigue and randomly-occurring pain. Still, I manage. I try to make the best of my good days by giving my career every ounce of energy I can spare.

I love my kids more than anything. What mother doesn’t? But in this game I call entrepreneurship, there is no such thing as balance.

My job, first and foremost, is to help my clients achieve everything the aim to. It’s what I get paid for. And how I feed my little ones. Work isn’t the most important thing in my life. But I focus all my concentration on my clients’ needs when I am working.

Final Thoughts

I love what I do. Honestly, there isn’t anything else I’d rather be doing. If I didn’t have financial obligations, I’d do it for free!

But in building up one side of my business I’m slowly forgetting about other facets of it. If I want my business to have several income streams and be a diversified, well-oiled machine, I have to get up and oil the parts that need it.

In your business, don’t forget to worry about your own foundation. Yes, taking care of clients is super important, but you should treat your business like one of your clients, too.

Start by setting aside time in your day to focus exclusively on your business. Be it writing, optimizing traffic, sharing content, set aside a time specifically for taking care of those needs.

Then, outsource what you can. I don’t have a huge budget for outsourcing. But I can afford to hire guest contributors to help me share the writing load.
